Skin tags are usually found on the on the eyelids, neck, armpits, the under-breast area and other parts of the body where the skin creases or has folds. They are small, harmless growths that hang off the skin and may sometimes be mistaken for warts. They are very common and can vary in both colour both and size. When appearing on the face they are often flatter than on other parts of the body.
Skin tags are usually caused by friction, either from the skin itself or from clothing or jewellery rubbing against the skin. They can also be hereditary or can form as a side effect of another medical condition, for example diabetes or obesity.
These benign growths will often cause irritation and annoyance and may continue to grow if they are not treated. They may cause practical as well as aesthetic issues, for example, if they occur on the face and are in a patient’s line of vision. Many people therefore decide to have skin tags removed.
We use shortwave diathermy to remove skin tags. This treatment delivers an energy current to destroy the blood vessels feeding the skin tag and offer immediate results with minimal downtime required.
